What it means to be human
On March 18 my daughter texted me in the morning “Happy St Patrick’s Day, do you remember that green sweater you used to wear when I was little?” Do I remember? My grandmother knitted it for me when I was 13 years old! And it still fits (kind of). Not that I was going into South class to explore St. Patrick’s Day. No, we were wrapping up our exploration of the Hindu celebration of Holi, a festival of colors, love, forgiveness, repair, and the coming of Spring. And about a half an hour in, my bright green “Saint Patrick’s Day” sweater was bedecked with all the pigments of our Holi celebration, as we painted our faces, threw the colored powder into the air and danced to traditional and contemporary Holi songs. Which is so much to say that Leila Day is a secular humanist school that aspires to build its calendar around the rhythms of the earth and the multicultural traditions that we bring together in a community where the ongoing task is to determine what it means to be human.
