In 2028, Leila Day Nursery will celebrate 150 years of nurturing children, strengthening families, and building community. As we prepare for this extraordinary milestone, we're reconnecting with our alumni community and honoring the people who have shaped Leila Day's story. Beginning in Fall 2027, we'll host a series of events that celebrate our history, lifelong connections, and the future of Leila Day. Whether you attended Leila Day, worked here, taught here, volunteered, or were part of our community, we hope you'll reconnect with us and be part of this historic celebration.

New Haven in 1878

In 1878, New Haven seemed to be bursting at the seams. Every day, newcomers from Europe streamed into the city, bringing the population from 20,000 in 1850 to 100,000
in 1900.

Fundraising

In 1900 the school advertised a five cents per day charge – in today’s terms that would be about $7.25 per week – and it was clear that many families could not pay the full amount. Fundraising was a necessity.

Parent & Family Support

Very early in its existence, the founders of the Mothers’ Aid Society recognized that childcare alone was insufficient for the well-being of children and their families.
