Are You a Carpenter or a Gardener?

Recently I cut my hair and was delighted with all the responses, especially from the children. Some of the younger children were genuinely apprehensive that I wasn’t the same person (it is also true of younger children that some just don’t even notice it). Some of the older children gleefully proclaimed that I was a “fake Charlie.” One particular child said, in front of his mother, with a calm sense of reassurance, “you look like a normal boy now.” The mom, somewhat mortified, said “we certainly aren’t raising him to traffic in gender stereotypes” and we went on to have a great conversation about how we talk with children and muddle through.
