Place based Education at Leila Day
My goal with this monthly newsletter is to share with you the philosophy, pedagogical practice, and the body, mind and heart of what we are trying to do here at Leila Day. “Place -based education,” is grounded in how we learn from where we live and utilize the land and the community as the “third teacher” to support each child’s growth, learning, and wellbeing (the “first teacher” being you, the child’s caretaker(s), and the “second teacher” being the teachers here at Leila Day). "We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect" (Aldo Leopold). To this end, every month, you will get a peek at what is going on in the natural world; what is going on in the community and culture; different perspectives on childhood, teaching, learning and care; and what is going on here at Leila Day.
